Parex render system - Makes for a great Vue!!!

A PAREXDIRECT acrylic render system forms a major part of the external elevations of a new multi-million pound, leisure complex in the centre of a North East railway heritage town.

Feethams, Darlington

The new Feethams centre in Darlington is home to a nine-screen Vue multiplex cinema, several well-known national chain restaurants and a Premier Inn hotel

The development, by property development and investment company Urban & Civic, stands on the site of the town’s former bus depot and adjacent to the former Darlington football league and cricket grounds, from which it takes its name.

The complex, features an attractive hard landscaped area at its core, flanked on three sides with imposing facades constructed in traditional red bricks and a bright PAREXDIRECT Acrylic render system which has been used on all upper levels of the building.

Leading North East design practice Niven Architects, specified the Parex system for the steel-framed structure due to the system’s flexibility that allows it to be applied to an external render board and also to work in conjunction with the concrete and steel frame structure. The system was used on over 900m² of façade and comprised a base substrate of Knauf Aquapanel render board mechanically fixed to the steel frame. The render board joints were all reinforced using Parex Maite and 355 AVU reinforcing mesh followed by a base coat of Parex Maite fully embedded with a layer of 355 AVU mesh. Parex DPR primer was then applied to provide suction control and depth of colour, prior to the application of the top coat finish, Parex DPR Acrylic render in 'Off White' colour.

During construction Parex Weathertech Weatherseal was used for providing a durable and flexible weather proofing membrane protection to all openings, while the completed rendered facades were treated with Paraguard, a unique breathable protective coat to provide enhanced water shedding properties.

Applicators for the system were Hodgson Rendering Specialist, of Hull, and the main contractor was McLaughlin & Harvey Construction Ltd., of Glasgow.
