A PAREXTHERM insulated render system is playing its part in the major upgrade of a mid 20th Century semi-detached home in a rural location near a Cheshire village to Passive House standards – the rigorous criteria for low energy homes.

The extensive upgrade was carried out by the home owner, Chris Copeman, who decided to train as a passive house consultant so that he could manage the whole project.

The upgrade process has resulted in the transformation of one side of a former 1940's Local Authority semi-detached property to achieve passive house certification within a strict budget.

Aiming for the highest standards of quality and performance from the outset, the owners and their architect Gil Schalom, a specialist in passive house design, set about improving all aspects of the energy-efficiency of the home encompassing the external and internal walls, floors, roof, triple glazed windows, doors, heating system and ventilation.

When it came to upgrading the performance of the existing cavity walls – which already had loose fibre fill insulation – a PAREXTHERM Mineral Render System was specified to insulate the external walls and help create a clean, modern appearance for the mainly brick-built property.

A suction control coat of Parex Micro Gobetis 3000 was first applied to regulate the porosity of the original brickwork substrate prior to the installation of an insulation layer comprising 200mm of fire retardent Stylite Platinum EPS 70E, expanded polystyrene which was adhesively fixed using Parex Maite prior to the application of Maite as a base coat with Parex 355 AVU mesh embedded to provide additional strengthening.

The top coat render of Parex EHI GM render in colour G20 (Off White) was then applied by specialist applicator Ian Jacks to provide a fresh, new external appearance for the home. The newly rendered elevations were also treated with Parex Paraguard breathable coating to assist against weathering and environmental staining.

Following all the changes the energy required for space heating at the 100 sq metre home (raised from 80 sq metres as the result of adding a loft bedroom) plummeted from 90 kWh/m²/yr to just 16  kWh/m²/yr and thanks to a feed-in tariff of approximately £1,500 for solar PV generation, there was an estimated profit on energy for the home of £800 over the course of the year - which included charging the owner’s electric car.

With the significant improvements gained through Passive House upgrades, the property’s heating can now be achieved by the use of three radiators and the retained combi boiler.

The green credentials of the property were also further enhanced by using offcuts from the external insulation system to insulate the floor of a second hand mahogany conservatory which was added to the property, by recycling the original loft insulation for reuse in the party wall and re-using oak salvaged from a local pub and school gym.
